Malawi boy create his own electricity

This Malawian boy  transformed his village by building electric windmills out of junk. The achievements are incredible considering he was forced to quit school at the age of 14 years old due to his family could no longer afford the $80-a-year (£50) fees. Because of his great interest in science, even though he no longer attend school, he kept up his education by going to a local library. By chance he picked up a tattered textbook and saw a picture of a windmill. The picture show that a windmill could make electricity and pump water. The boy feel that this could be a good away to defence against hunger. During the building process the people in the village has no idea of what he is doing as they say they have never seen a windmill before.

He started building the windmill since 2002 below show some of his progress:

  • 2002: Drought strikes; he leaves school; builds 5m windmill
  • 2006: Daily Times writes article on him; he builds a 12m windmill
  • 2007: Brings solar power to his village and installs solar pump
  • Mid-2008: Builds Green Machine windmill, pumping well water
  • Sep 2008: Attends inaugural African Leadership Academy class
  • Mid-2009: Builds replica of original 5m windmill

He had since upgraded his original windmill to 48-volts and anchored it in concrete after its wooden base was chewed away by termites. He is now studying at the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg with a well-deserved scholarship.
